A HIGH-LEVEL E-BIKE COMPETITION

Taking advantage of the undisputed boom in e-bikes, Costa Brava-Girona and Europe’s cycling festival are hosting a round of the E-Bike World Cup calendar.

Sea Otter Europe, Europe’s bike show, which will be held on 24, 25 and 26 September, 2021, and its base in Girona-Costa Brava, know full well the importance of e-bikes, which is why they are hosting this high-level prestigious competition in their sporting calendar.

The World E-Bike Series, which started out in Monaco organising and promoting the first international e-bike championship in the electric discipline, works to promote elite competition e-bike racing. The circuit has been endorsed by the UCI to be the first e-bike World Cup competition with UCI rating. For the first time in history, and after this third edition (the circuit began in 2019), races will offer UCI points with riders vying to compete in the UCI World Championships and fight for the rainbow jersey. Athletes who, due to the fact the circuit is just starting out, are sure to make e-MTB history.

For 2021, the WES has a calendar consisting of six sporting events, the majority organised in Europe, and one of them as part of the Sea Otter Europe festival.

WES 2021 calendar

  1. Monaco – 24–25 April
  2. Italy, Bologna-Appennino – 5–6 June
  3. Italy, TBA – 12–13 June
  4. France, TBA – 17–18 July
  5. Spain, Girona, Costa Brava at Sea Otter Europe – 24–25 September
  6. Spain, Castelldefels, Barcelona – 16–17 October

A circuit with unstoppable potential for fame and growth

To date, the competition brings together a total of 21 competing teams, with three Olympic medallists on its grid: José Antonio Hermida, Marco Aurelio Fontana and Nathalie Schneitter. Also taking part in the competition will be reigning E-XC World Champion Mélanie Pugin and two-time sub-World Champion Jérôme Gilloux.

What’s more, it brings together eight electric motor manufacturers and 19 bike manufacturers who will be competing to offer the circuit’s best performance. The competition is therefore not only decided on the ground but in the factories themselves – a veritable R&D laboratory dedicated to improving commercial e-bikes.

The WES event is gaining a great following on its social media platforms as well as media coverage and recognition among cycling enthusiasts. It promises to be an event of great importance in the future, in view of the figures it has already managed to tally up across just three editions.

Without a doubt, the world of e-bikes shows no signs of slowing down, and now, even more, so in the field of competition. WES is the perfect formula for giving extra visibility to the competitive e-bike discipline, which is here to stay.

The e-Bike World Cup course will be one of the test circuits for the festival’s demobike programme

On the same circuit as the World E-bike Series competition, visitors will be able to test out electric bikes from the best brands in the world. The circuit is located just 300 metres from the festival.

In the 2019 edition, 72% of the bikes in the fleet were e-bikes. And the trend is on the rise with major launches and major improvements in terms of motor, range and power.

Some of the bike test brands that have already confirmed their participation at Sea Otter Europe include Bergamont, BH, BMC, Bulls, Cannondale, Canyon, Corratec, Cube, Fischer, Ghost, Haibike, Intense, KTM, Lapierre, Massi, Megamo, MMR, Moustache, Orbea, Riese and Mueller, Scott and Specialized.

Sea Otter Europe is committed to the future of e-bikes and all the innovation they represent, which is why it is expanding its sporting programme with this top competition.
